Last month we discussed the many expressions of Mothers Day around the world. This month, it's all about Dad...

In the United States, Father’s Day has been observed since at least 1910, but did not become an national holiday until 1972… a full 58 years after Mothers Day was officially recognized in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson. Why the lag time? Some have suggested that it's because Fathers simply don’t have the same sentimentality attached to them that Mothers do. This might have some basis, as it’s estimated that Americans spend $1 billion for Fathers Day, far less than the $21 billion spent for Mothers Day a month earlier.

In the United States and elsewhere, Fathers Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. However, in many European and Latin American countries, fathers are recognized on the Catholic holiday of St. Joseph’s Day, on March 19. In Germany, the 40th day after Easter has been set aside for fathers since the Middle Ages, called “Vatertag”; traditionally it’s celebrated with a men-only hike with wagons of food, beer & wine, though nowadays a pub crawl is more likely. In Nepal, fathers are honored on “Gokarna Aunsi” in late summer; besides giving gifts, it is a traditional sign of respect for sons to touch their father’s feet with their foreheads, while daughters touch their foreheads to their father’s hands. Israel doesn’t officially celebrate either Fathers Day or Mothers Day, but never fear…both parents are honored on “Family Day”, celebrated on the 30th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat.
